Guest blog: How to choose the right photographer for your wedding
by Sam Gavins, Winchester-based Wedding, Family, Event and Personal Branding Photographer
I guess you’re here because you’ve said ‘yes’ to one of the most exciting questions you’ve ever been asked… So let’s start with a huge congratulations! Now it’s time to get planning! I know and understand that choosing flowers for your wedding day can be an exciting, yet daunting task. But what about a photographer? If you’re on the hunt for the perfect wedding photography to capture your special day – then how do you choose? There are lots of great photographers out there and so many styles to choose from. In this blog, I’m sharing some top tips to answer some of the common problems that people experience along the way and what you can do to ensure you make the right choice for you.
- Firstly. Research and gather recommendations:
Start by doing some online research and reading reviews to find local photographers in your area. Ask your friends, family, and other wedding vendors for any recommendations. Don’t forget to check out their portfolios!
- Know what you’re looking for:
When you start searching for photographers, consider what vibe you’re looking for. There are a lot of factors to consider when selecting a wedding photographer, such as their style, experience, and pricing, so it’s important to figure out what your priorities are. Is there a particular look you’re aiming for? Or do you just want someone to capture the day as it unfolds?
- Set a budget:
Your photographs are most likely going to be a significant investment, so I recommend that you set a budget, to narrow down your options and avoid overspending. If you want to stretch your budget, you may need to be flexible with your expectations, such as the number of hours you need a photographer at your wedding, or the amount of photos you’re hoping to get from them. A good photographer will be able to guide you on how to achieve your vision within your price range and suggest alternatives and/or creative ways to make the most out of your budget.
- Consider the photographer’s expertise:
Pay attention to the photographer’s knowledge and experience. Different photographers will have certain styles and you’ll want to work with one who is able to capture the feel and style you want to achieve. Make sure you connect with them, too. Can they see your vision? Do they make you feel comfortable? Do you vibe with them? Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their experience, previous customers and pricing. It’s important to get it right! They’re going to be an important part of your day.
- Agree the brief and get a detailed proposal:
Make sure you’re clear on what you want and you feel confident your chosen photographer is able to do this for you. Get a detailed quote/proposal and ensure it includes everything you’re hoping to capture. And, most importantly ensure they have details of the venue(s) and date! Review the proposals carefully to ensure they align with your expectations.
- Finally. A firm favourite. Trust your instincts:
You’ll probably know before you’ve even finished your introduction meeting. Trust your gut feeling. Work with someone who not only understands your vision but also makes you feel comfortable and confident in their abilities to bring your dream wedding to life!
Every picture tells a story! Finding the right photographer for you can be a fun and creative task. Try following the above tips, you can find someone who will be able to capture your day perfectly. After all, photography is the only language that can be understood anywhere in the world without the need for translation…
